A Visit to the 35th Super Corvette Sunday in Langenthal

For the 35th time, the Super Corvette Sunday took place on August 25, 2024. This free event, held in Langenthal (Switzerland), is the largest and oldest Corvette meeting in all of Europe. streetwheelz1 was on-site.

Organized by the Swiss Corvette Club International & Corvettes Unlimited Switzerland, the Super Corvette Sunday took place for the 35th time. This event is reputed to be the largest Corvette meeting in all of Europe. How many Corvette models were on Langenthal’s streets and parked on the festival grounds that day is hard to say, as participants do not have to register in advance. However, in previous years, around 400 vehicles were reported.

Over the sound of 1980s songs blaring from the speakers, the harmonious roar of exhausts could be heard, especially when classics like a stylish red and white C1 were on the move. Anyone who wanted to see the various eras of the Corvette at a glance was in for a treat in Langenthal. But not only in front of the hotel, where all the cars were carefully parked side by side, but also on the streets, Corvette fever was in full swing. Practically every minute, you could observe the models making their presence felt on Lotzwilstrasse.

Many Classic Cars on the Road – Not Just Corvettes

It wasn’t just Corvette spotters who got their money’s worth at the event: Among the usual Sunday traffic and Corvettes, other classic and exotic cars could be seen on the streets. streetwheelz1 spotted the following visual treats: a Bristol Saloon 406, a 1970 Dodge Challenger Mopar, an Alfa Romeo 2000 GTV, a Pontiac Firebird Trans Am 5.7 V8, a Rolls-Royce Silver Shadow, and a Studebaker Avanti. However, these impressive cars would not have gained entry to the festival grounds, as this day was solely about the Corvette. Not even a Camaro made it in. However, Corvette owners could enter their model, if belonging to a certain era, into a beauty contest judged by a specialized jury.

Various models and colors were presented to the spectators, and some hoods were popped open. The Stingray was well represented, but the rest of the C-lineup was also abundant at the event—from C1 to C8. As a spectator, when not enjoying a bratwurst at the festival benches or admiring the new cars in the hall, you could even go for a spin. Like in a beehive, there was constant activity on the grounds with cars arriving and departing, so you could always admire the cars in action.

Corvette – The Story of a Legend

With the Corvette, Chevrolet has undoubtedly created a legend. This car draws attention with its characteristic curved and elongated design. While one has to dig deep into their pockets for other impressive sports cars, a Corvette C4 5.7 Coupé can be found on the pre-owned market for around 14,000 CHF. The former chief engineer for the C5 and C6 once summed it up: “We don’t want to build collector’s items like other big brands do; we want to build sports cars that any working American can afford.”

Of course, this does not apply to all models. A C8 Z06 Z07 Convertible is not exactly cheap at 245,000 CHF. But it may well be part of a new era. In sports cars, there is a clear trend that newer models also resemble each other in design. This is likely due to the new mid-engine layout. Thus, the C8 does indeed resemble a Ferrari F8 Tributo or a McLaren 720S. You may like it or not, but the Corvette remains a legend. And let’s not forget: Once, it was a Jaguar XK 120 that inspired Chevrolet to build the Corvette. These sparks that leap across are crucial. No Pagani without Lamborghini, no Lamborghini without Ferrari, and no Ferrari without Alfa Romeo. But also, no Corvette without Jaguar.

The mutual inspiration among car brands is ultimately a blessing for all who love cars, no matter the brand. And the Corvette definitely has its permanent place in the history of the best sports cars.
